Day Thirty-Three -- Trying to keep it all going

2 Chronicles 23:16 to 2 Chronicles 35:15

With the northern kingdom of Israel basically out of the picture, the kingdom of Judah seeks to remain faithful to the LORD.  Well, sort of.  It all seems to depend upon the inclination of the king.  When the king walks in the way of the LORD the people tend to follow.  When the king is unfaithful, well then so are the people.  But there always seems to be a prophet somewhere who is ready and willing to speak out against the apostasy that is in the land.  I've also wondered about the priests and Levites, who also seem to be around when they are needed but never seem to push or encourage following the ways of the LORD until they are organized and appointed to do so.  Obviously not everyone has forgotten what is required of them, but they sure do seem to keep it to themselves.

Within this day's reading it is king Hezekiah that gets the most attention.  He seems to be a favorite of 2 Chronicles and in chapter 32 we are told of his strategic plan to protect the water supply of Jerusalem from the impending siege of a Assyrian king.  Hezekiah's project was not just a story in the Bible but a reality.  One of the sites I did not get to visit when I went to Jerusalem is what is known as "Hezekiah's Tunnel."  If I ever get to go back it is something I'll have to do.  You can read more about Hezekiah's Tunnel here or watch this 9-minute video.  If clicking on the links doesn't work, the addresses are included below.
