Day Fifteen - Moses: Leader, Law-Giver, Prophet
Deuteronomy 23:12 to Deuteronomy 34:12
On this the fifteenth day of the first month of the people's journey through the Bible, we complete our reading of the Book of Deuteronomy. We have now completed the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. For most of the reading so far, from Exodus to Deuteronomy, the central character in the drama has been Moses. God called him to confront Pharaoh and to lead the people out of slavery and into the wilderness. Then it was through Moses that God gave the law and the commandments to the people. Finally, as the people are poised to enter the Promised Land, Moses becomes the prophet who warns the Israelites of the the consequences of being disobedient and straying from the ways of the LORD.
What was it about Moses that God chose him for such important roles? Moses admittedly was not a good talker (was that just his excuse to try and get out of answering the call?). What he proved again and again was that he was faithful to the LORD even when everyone around him was either complaining or on the verge of rebellion. His role in the formation of the people of God cannot be downplayed or diminished in the hearts of the people of Israel or the followers of Jesus Christ.
